THESE amazing pictures seem to prove something geeks and Sci-Fi fans have suspected for years - there's life on Mars.

Nasa's Mars Explorer Spirit sent us these images from the surface of the Red Planet four years ago.

After intense scrutiny, pictures that could be a living being have finally been found.

An amateur astronomer commented: "As far as I'm concerned, this is proof.

The Calendar Trick

This trick makes you look like you've got the most awesome mental power. All you need is a calendar which has the dates lined up under the days of the week, so the numbers are arranged something like this:

The "9 number" trick

• Ask a friend to draw a 3x3 box around ANY nine of the numbers on the calendar.
• Almost immediately you can say what the nine numbers all add up to!
• See how long it takes your friend to check the answer on a calculator. (Yawn...snore...zzzz...)

For instance, let's say the red numbers are chosen.

They add up to 198.

THE SECRET: All you do is look at the number in the middle and multiply it by 9.

In this case the middle number is 22 and 22 x 9 = 198.

HANDY TIP: To multiply by 9 quickly, just multiply by 10 then subtract your number.
So to get 22 x 9 you multiply 22 x 10 =220 (easy!) and then subtract 22. With a bit of practise you can do this quickly in your head.

The "20 number" trick

• Ask a friend to draw a 5x4 box around ANY twenty of the numbers on the calendar.
• Almost immediately you can say what all twenty numbers add up to!

For instance, let's say the yellow numbers are chosen.

They add up to 290.

THE SECRET: Add together the smallest and the largest numbers in the group. Multiply the answer by 10.

In this case the smallest number is 2 and the largest is 27, so 2 + 27 = 29. Then 29 x 10 = 290.

With the "20 number trick" if the calendar month is February occasionally it will not be possible to put a box round 20 numbers.

Paper Tearing Challenge

Cut a piece of paper into thirds, but don't cut the pieces all the way off.

Hold the outer two pieces at the corners.

Can you rip both of the outer pieces off of the center piece with one strong pull?

Static Electricity with a Balloon

Try blowing up a balloon and then rubbing it on your hair.

It creates static electricity which attracts your hair!

You can even use static electricity to stick the balloon to things!

Traveling Flame

This is fascinating, but be very careful since you'll be dealing with fire!

First light a candle, and have another flame ready (such as another lit candle, or a lit match, or something similar).

Blow out the candle, then quickly place the other flame into the smoke.

If you do it right, the flame will travel down the smoke and re-light the candle!

The Index Card Trick

Can you cut a hole in an index card so that the hole is big enough for you to step inside of it?

Here's how!

First fold an index card in half.

Cut (carefully!) along the pink line, starting at the creased end.

Stop cutting about half an inch from the edge.

Cut along the blue line at the other side, starting at the creased end.

Cut along the crease, between the two outer strips.

Don't cut the two outer strips!

On the main part of the index card between the two outer strips, cut along the next blue line as in the picture.

Stop cutting about half an inch from the edge.

Cut along the blue line at the other side, as in the picture.

Continue cutting along the blue lines, alternating the direction in which you start cutting.


Continue until there are only two blue lines left.


Your last cut needs to be a single cut between the final two blue lines.


If you did it correctly then you now have a continuous ring.
